After a fight of year performance last week (between Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler), Bellator followed up with a very weak thud. The night was set to crown two tournament winners, and cap a very good season 5.
The outcome? Disappointment.
In the night’s main event, Eric Prindle and Thiago Santos squared off, for the right to fight Cole Konrad for the Bellator heavyweight title. All it took was a perfectly timed kick to the groin, as Santos nailed it; on a downed Prindle. And with it came the end. As Prindle was unable to continue after taking five minutes to recuperate, telling the ringside doctor that he felt very nauseous and was having problems breathing. The fight was ruled a no contest. With a winner undecided, a rematch between the two is expected in early 2012.
In the co-main event, Patricky “Pitbull” Freire made quick work of UFC veteran Kurt Pellegrino. The Brazilian native landed a sweet combo early, a left followed by a swift right hook, both of which landed clean and rocked Pellegrino. Once Kurt dropped, Freire jumped on top of him, landing some good hammerfists. Freire continued until the ref intervened, halting the bout. Pellegrino wasn’t out, and the stop seemed like it may have been too soon. However, Freire was extremely impressive. As for Pellegrino, he opted to retire for the second time, calling it quits in his home state of New Jersey (the card took place in Atlantic City).
