It lasted a little over a minute, but that was enough for a new champ to be crowned. As the UFC made its grand debut on FOX, Junior dos Santos made waves by taking out UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. The challenger and champ were striking early and often, as Velasquez landed a barrage of successful leg kicks while JDS landed a vicious hook to Cain’s body and some pretty stiff rights. Things were fairly even until JDS landed an overhand right that found its mark, and it wobbled the champ. JDS would continue his assault by hovering over Cain while landing some relentless ground and pound, causing referee Big John to stop the fight. And just like that the heavyweight division crowns a new champion on prime time.
In the night’s fight of the night, Ben Henderson proved he belongs at the top of lightweight heap. He went to war with Clay Guida, and rocked the UFC veteran early and often in the first round. Henderson was also about to get the better of Guida in the grappling game as well. It was an impressive performance from the onetime WEC champion.
Henderson is now set to challenge Frankie Edgar in February in Japan.
