Fact or Fiction? Georges St.Pierre is becoming the UFC’s version of Floyd Mayweather?

March 28, 2010 by Narcisist in Featured, News, UFC, UFC with 19 Comments

Fact or Fiction: Georges St.Pierre defeated Dan Hardy at UFC 111 by unanimous decision in very dominant fashion, taking down the British fighter for five rounds and having his way with him for a overwhelming majority of the fight. While most observers consider St.Pierre’s performance dominating and impressive, there are a few fans that consider the performance boring.

Now St.Pierre is being compared to boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, who is often critisized for his defensive style where he picks apart his challengers and for 12 rounds. Floyd is often criticised by his critics as a “safe” fighter who does not take chances and never really looks to finish and St.Pierre’s style of wrestling and ground and pound is being pointed out by some critics as the same.

St.Pierre’s style is similar, taking down his opponents at will and grinding them out for five rounds. St.Pierre has now defeated Josh Koscheck, Matt Serra, Jon Fitch, BJ Penn, Thiago Alves and Dan Hardy in his past six consecutive fights. While the welterweight champion’s performances have been impressive and dominating, he has rarely stood toe-to-toe with his opponents and traded strikes.

Some observers feel that St.Pierre is now also becoming a “Safe fighter” who is scared to stand and trade with his competition. I want to know what you think, vote in this poll below and respond in the comment section on this statement.

Fact he is scared ever since Serra Ko’d him and doesnt want to take a punch so he just takes everyone down

    • Hellboi

STFU your just still mad he beat BJ

      • Marcus

Im over it buy GSP is not over losing to Serra and wont take a chance that he can lose and try to finish get off his nuts he is not perfect

  • mayhem14

it was pretty obvious he tried to finish and it doesnt make sense to try and stand with someone with ko power if you can just take them down and sub him.

  • Rider917

Why does anyone have the balls to blame him he did what he had to it’s not his fault Hardy can’t sprawl

  • MMA math

He’s boring and so is Fitch that was UFC 111 wrestling and lay and pray

    • Hellboi

Your such a idiot what is he supposed to do let Hardy get some free punches in too?

I am not saying it’s fun to watch five rounds of wrestling cause it’s not but even in Pride Gsp wouldn’t have gotten a yellow card he was active an he kept moving, hitting, looking for submissions and striking

striking finishes fights; submission finishes fights; big power finishes fights; BUT TAKEDOWN DOESN’T. that’s why GSP is boring, unfortunately, that’s is not gonna change any time soon, the same reason why silva won’t go to the ground with Leites, GSP is not gonna strike with you if he knows for a fact that he can win by taking you down all day.

    • Hellboi

Hardy is a tough son of a bitch he was in two tight submissions and had his arm locked in tight. Hardy just didn’t tap out cause he’s a tough dude.

Takedowns don’t win fights but they get him in position to win like they did last night. It’s not boring cause he keeps on hitting his opponents the whole time.

i thought gsp stood with fitch alot of the time in that fight.destroyed penn with ground and pound, still defeated alves with a torn groin. and had two great subs on hardy.

  • Don Guido

It’s not like he didn’t try Hardy got out of that first one cleanly cause he used a good counter to escape give him some credit

  • malito

couldnt agree more everyone bitches about fitch being boring gsps done the exact same thing everyone needs to get off his nuts i do like gsp as a fighter but he says he wants to finish his fights exciting then do it put it all on the line like a champ and play with fire had he stood with hardy he would of got rocked then take him to the ground if he cant hang but show some kind of determination

  • emorej

..i feel like GSP i limiting himself to relying on his ground game, he has the best takedowns, im not denying that, but i think if he wants to finish fights, he might need to incorporate a little more stand-up.

not saying, that theres anything wrong with his stand up either.

    • emorej

      -GSP is limiting. *spelling error*

  • Vascular

Tough one to call? I think its alittle of both. He’s playing it safe, when its a dangerous striker and aggressive when its not.
    He’s a strategic fighter.

  • Aaren

Well your obviously either a BJ Penn fan or some other type of fan that GSP has beat the shit out of. The fact is that Georges is the strongest and the best, if you dont think he’ll stand up and trade with his opponents maybe you should look at his fight against Jon Fitch, He messed him up and he stood up with him, ask Jon Fitch how his stand up is, and if he tries to finish fights. There’s no doubt Georges tries to finish fights, his recent opponents have been so tough that they dont want to give up, Georges makes people like Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy and BJ Penn look like they’ve never ever been in a fight before, he’s insanely good, if you think his style is boring go fucking watch muay thai fights if you wanna see knockouts. It’s MMA, not boxing.
