At last year’s Dynamite!! 2008 card former DREAM middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi fought at a K-1 level match and defeated Musashi by way of KO. Now at this year’s Dynamite!! 2009 card on New Year’s Eve in Japan, the current StrikeForce light heavyweight champion will be competing under the same K-1 rules, but does not have an opponent for the event as of yet. However, back in the U.S. Mousasi also says that since he is under M-1 Global management who is a partner with StrikeForce can only fight on their cards at the same time as M-1′s biggest asset in former PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko.
In a chat with Ariel Helwani for MMAFanhouse.com Mousasi learned of the signing of another fighter coming to StrikeForce in Dan Henderson and would take that fight on knowing what a win over the former PRIDE dual champion could do for his budding career.
However, when asked as to when Mousasi will be competing in MMA for StrikeForce about a next fight, he stated that his contract suggests that he fights only when his M-1 Global teammate Fedor Emelianenko competes on the same fight card, which may not happen until StrikeForce’s next big event on CBS in April, 2010.
I believe that M-1 should promote Mousasi on his own and not have him compete on the same card as Fedor, despite both of them being on a card together is great Fedor will not be doing this forever and Mousasi is still only 24 years old and has what it takes to be great when his career comes to a close.
However, an April fight card on CBS would be looking great at the same time should Fedor face Alistair Overeem for the heavyweight title and Mousasi meets Dan Henderson for the light heavyweight championship, but Mousasi concludes by saying that he will fight whoever they put in front of him.
Fan Question: What are the chances of these two matchups happening on the same StrikeForce card in 2010?
